Montco Health Dept Rabies Clinic

encoreAbout 200 dog and cat owners took their pets out in the sunshine Saturday for a Montgomery County Health Department rabies clinic at Encore Experiences, formerly known as the Harleysville Senior Center. Communicable Disease Intervention Specialist Bob Brooker says most rabies cases over the past few years have been in wild animals, but the threat to household pets is real.

“Our domestic pets always run the risk of dealing with a wild animal, for instance in their backyard.  Take a look at what has happened in the county in, say, the last ten years.  We have taken down I don’t know how many acres and we have built tons and tons of homes, so as a result that destroyed habitats for these wild animals that, maybe for centuries, had been coming to that area, thinking that’s their home and all of a sudden houses are there, and now we’re in their backyard.”

Brooker says rabies can be deadly for both pets and humans.  Another rabies clinic is coming up next Saturday, June 26, from 9:00 to 11:00am, at Oakland-Burnside Park in West Norriton.  The shots are $10 per animal, and they take dogs, cats and ferrets.
