Grand Jury Probe Targets McNeil Recalls

medical-symbolA federal grand jury is investigating problems that led to recalls of non-prescription medicines made at the McNeil Consumer Healthcare plant in Fort Washington. Parent company Johnson and Johnson is also facing a number of lawsuits as a result of the recalls.  The company recalled nearly 150 million bottles of Children’s Tylenol, Benadryl and other products made by McNeil after Food and Drug Administration investigators found contamination in raw ingredients used at the Fort Washington plant.  Production there has been suspended since April, and it will remain closed at least until next summer.  The company says the recalls and plant shutdown will cost about $600 million this year, but that’s only a small part of the $15.3 billion it earned in the second quarter, when the company had a 7.5 percent increase in sales, despite flat sales on the recalled products.
