A U.S. National Open-Water Swim Team member from Montgomery County died Saturday during a race in the United Arab Emirates. 26-year-old Fran Crippen was from a prominent swimming family in Conshohocken and a graduate of Germantown Academy in Fort Washington. He died while competing for the Ten-Kilometer World Cup. His body was found in the water two hours after the race, 400 meters short of the finish line. Officials say he died of overexertion. The race was held in 100-degree weather with the water temperature in the mid-80’s, which is unusually hot for competitive swimming. Several other swimmers were treated for heat exhaustion after the race.
