Turnpike Work Starts This Month

Turnpike-LogoConstruction starts later this month on a project to re-build and widen the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Off-site work including bridge reconstruction has been going on for a few years.  Work starts Monday, February 28, weather permitting, on about six miles of roadway in Plymouth, Whitpain and Worcester Townships, from the Mid-County Interchange to a point just south of Berks Road.  Plans call for widening the existing four-lane highway from four lanes to six, with full twelve-foot-wide shoulders on both sides of the travel lanes.  The project should be finished in late 2013, and after that work will start on the final section between Berks Road and the Lansdale Interchange.  That section should be finished in late 2016, and toll revenues are funding the entire $151 million project, with no state or federal tax dollars.
