Vita Program Offers Free Tax Prep Assistance

united_wayThe North Penn United Way is giving low and middle-income people free help with preparing their income tax returns. Volunteer Center Coordinator Christa Detweiler says the VITA program started three years ago at the request of the Internal Revenue Service.

“The IRS identified the area as having about $3 million that was going unclaimed, and that is either from people not filing their taxes, not filing them correctly, or not claiming the correct credits that they were eligible for, so there was all this money out there that people were eligible for but they didn’t know about it and they weren’t claiming.”

Detweiler says they got people more than $535,000 in refunds last year, largely through the Earned Income Tax Credit.  The free tax assistance is offered at ten sites including the Indian Valley Public Library, Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansdale and Montgomery County Community College.  To make an appointment and get more information about eligibility, call the North Penn United Way at 215-855-3319.  Appointments are required.  Detweiler appeared Monday on the WNPV talk program Indian Valley Live.
