Teacher Strikes---Not What They Used to Be

North Penn teachers continue their walkout.  Fortunately teacher strikes are much less common than they were 20 years ago.  I started working here in 1985 and that fall---NP, Wissy and Souderton teachers all hit the bricks.   In delving into my archives for my 25 yr anniversary programs next week---I found a report that a Pennridge strike in 1988 resulted in a 3 yr contract that boosted salaries more than 60%!   That sparked the creation of a taxpayers group by John and Jean Bolger. Similar groups cropped up in most of the local districts and exerted considerable political muscle in local school board elections.   Those groups faded away by the end of the 90's.  Given the pending pension crisis in PA and it's budget
busting potential---we may see their return.   There was a day when teachers were grossly underpaid, that is no longer the case.
