A small supermarket chain based in Bucks County has bought a single Genuardi’s Market with help from a federal government agency. McCaffrey’s Supermarkets, headquartered in Yardley, is buying the Newtown store.
It was initially one of 16 stores the Giant chain bought from Safeway, the company that owned Genuardi’s for a few years. But then the Federal Trade Commission stepped in and said opening a Giant in a shopping center adjacent to one that had an Acme would leave Newtown with too little competition, so lawyers for the FTC, Giant and little McCaffrey’s worked out a deal.
The company will take possession of the Newtown store on July 6, close it for a week and re-open under the McCaffrey’s name. Safeway has still not decided what to do with two Montgomery County stores, the Genuardi’s Supermarket in Audubon and the Genuardi’s Pharmacy in North Wales.
