Woman Who Poisoned Pets Cleared Of Criminal Charges

montco_courthouseA former Towamencin woman accused of feeding rat poison to her 29 cats and one dog has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. A Montgomery County judge found that 57-year-old Linda Muchnick was incapable of understanding the consequences of her actions.  She had been charged with cruelty to animals and attempted cruelty.  While she was cleared of the criminal charges, she is still under court order to continue mental health treatment.  Twelve cats died after her arrest in august of last year, and the other cats and the dog are staying at Montgomery County SPCA shelters.  Prosecutors say Towamencin Township Police found a note in Muchnick’s home saying she planned to kill herself along with her pets because of financial hardship.  She felt it was the only way out, and she wanted to join them in Heaven.  When police arrived at her East Bishopwood Boulevard home they found the cats in a locked bedroom with no open windows and an overwhelming stench of feces and urine, and they found rat poison in their food bowls.  They found Muchnick in another locked, poorly ventilated bedroom with a sick pit bull dog.
