A Lower Pottsgrove woman who admitted stealing more than $170,000 from her 91-year-old grandmother has been given 10 to 23 months in Montgomery County Prison. 30-year-old Joelle Speidel pleaded guilty to theft by deception and related offenses. The grandmother asked her for help with the account because she has an educational background in finance. Prosecutors say she made electronic transfers and check payments for her personal expenses including car payments, credit card payments, cell phone bills, vacations, and her tuition at Saint Joseph’s University. The thefts came to light last year when her monthly payments to the Dock Woods Retirement Community in Towamencin stopped for lack of funds. She wiped out her grandmother’s retirement savings in 1 ½ years. The Dock Woods Community is allowing her grandmother to continue living there. She has repaid some of the money, and the judge made her eligible for work-release so she can continue making payments.
