Mom Denies Using Stolen Credit Cards

dollarsThe mother of a confessed thief from Lower Pottsgrove has denied using credit cards her daughter stole. 65-year-old Sharon Speidel of Vineland, New Jersey pleaded not guilty to theft and other offenses.  Prosecutors say she used the stolen cards to play at casinos and buy airline and concert tickets.  Her daughter, 30-year-old Joelle Speidel, pleaded guilty to theft and other offenses earlier this year.  She admitted stealing nearly $170,000 from her 91-year-old grandmother, and is currently serving 10 to 23 months in Montgomery County Prison.  The grandmother asked her for help with the account because she has an educational background in finance.  Prosecutors say she made electronic transfers and check payments for her personal expenses.  The thefts came to light last year when her monthly payments to the Dock Woods retirement community in Towamencin stopped for lack of funds.  Court documents say mother and daughter wiped out the grandmother’s retirement savings in 1 ½ years.  The Dock Woods Community is allowing her to continue living there.  The younger Speidel has repaid some of the money, and the judge made her eligible for work-release so she can continue making payments.
