Ex Montco Firefighter, Accused Arsonist, Waives Hearing

gaugerA former volunteer firefighter, accused of setting four fires in Limerick Township between January and July of last year, has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. That means his case moves one step closer to trial in Montgomery County Court.  21-year-old Douglas Gauger (pictured here) is charged with arson and related offenses.  He responded to all four incidents as a member of the Linfield Fire Company.  The fires destroyed a picnic pavilion at Trinley River Park and two garages at the Western Montgomery County Vocational-Technical School, heavily damaged a barn on Possum Hollow Road and damaged a home on Benner Road.  Court documents say a break in the investigation came when a friend said Gauger showed him burns on his leg that he claimed he received while fighting the tech school fire.  Limerick Fire Marshal Dennis Rumler told detectives no one reported being burned in that incident because they were all wearing “bunker pants” that protect firefighters from burns.  He inspected the pants Gauger wore and found no damage.  Detectives tracked him to West Virginia, where he moved around the middle of last year, and he admitted setting the fires.
