Driver In Fatal Crash Gets Federal Time For Faking Log Books

A Northeast Philadelphia man who admitted causing a fatal crash nearly three years ago on the Schuylkill Expressway is heading back to prison. 55-year-old truck driver Valerijs Belovs served time in Montgomery County for vehicular homicide, and now he’s going to federal prison for falsifying his commercial truck driver log books, saying he was resting while he was really on the road.  The truck plowed into four other vehicles during a traffic jam on the Schuylkill Expressway’s Conshohocken Curve in January of 2009, killing 49-year-old David Schreffler of Fort Washington.  Pennsylvania State Police and Montgomery County Detectives found that the tractor-trailer was unable to stop because it had bad brakes.  State police said the driver kept it on the road under the direction of owner Victor Kalinitchii, even though both men knew all ten brake assemblies were overworked, thin or cracked.  He and mechanic Joseph Jadczak, who provided inspection stickers without having looked at the truck, also spent time in county prison for vehicular homicide.
