Pa's top political commentator, Dr. Terry Madonna expects the 24th district race to be the most expensive legislative race in the history of the Keystone State. The district is kind of split between Montgomery and Bucks County in the Philadelphia market and Lehigh and Northampton County in the Lehigh Valley. The history of the district's tortured geography is interesting. The GOP controlled process of re-drawing the lines was successful in convincing the longtime Republican incumbent Ed Holl not to run for
re-election. Holl could have won re-election forever had the district remained mainly in
Montco. Holl was well into his 80's and didn't have the energy to run for re-election in what was essentially a new district. He retired and then passed away. Holl had a well deserved reputation as difficult and prickly, but I often thought it was ironic how members of his own party turned on him and basically cut his political throat. It was a classic demonstration of what a messy business politics can be when it becomes your chosen profession!
