A district judge has set high bail for an Upper Gwynedd woman, accused of stealing a home and retirement savings from a Hatfield man who was a stroke victim. 54-year-old Janet Gitney’s bail was set at $7.5 million cash after prosecutors argued that she posed a flight risk. She was arrested last month at JFK Airport in New York, following a global search by Montgomery County Detectives, the FBI and foreign authorities. She had been hiding out in the Philippines. Federal authorities took her into custody and charged her with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The local charges include theft, forgery and fraud. A Montgomery County judge has signed an order allowing authorities to seize both her home, on Brian Way in Upper Gwynedd, and the Hatfield home, and sell them and turn the proceeds over to the stroke victim, 57-year-old Eugene Waldspurger, who has been living in a Bucks County nursing home. Prosecutors say she stole the home by using her power of attorney to have it transferred to her name without the owner’s knowledge or approval.
