Murder Defendant: “I’m A Monster”

Souderton_GardenThe lawyer defending a Souderton man accused of raping and killing a nine-year-old girl is asking a Montgomery County judge to suppress statements the defendant made to police shortly after his arrest. 25-year-old James Troutman’s lawyer says his client allegedly confessed and asked police to shoot him saying repeatedly, “I’m a monster.”  Attorney Craig Penglase suggests that Troutman’s constitutional protections against self-incrimination and his right to legal counsel were violated.  He is charged with first and second degree murder, kidnapping and rape of a child in the death of Skyler Kauffman.

She was abducted in May of last year after playing with friends in a parking lot outside the Souderton Gardens Apartments where she lived with her mother and grandmother, at Second and Chestnut Streets.  Troutman lived in the same complex.  He told police he choked the victim and hit her head against a concrete floor.  District Attorney Risa Ferman has said she will seek the death penalty if he is convicted of first degree murder.
