Would-be Robber Sentenced

An Upper Bucks County man will be spending 5 to 15 years in a state prison for a failed robbery attempt. 29-year-old Jack Egner of Richland received the sentence yesterday in Bucks County Court for a March incident at the Trum Tavern in Trumbauersville.

Police say 70-year-old Robert Tomkins of Richland just got into his pick-up truck after leaving the Trum on the evening of March 3rd. Egner approached the vehicle and demanded cash, making a gesture like he had a gun under his coat. Tomkins pretended to reach for cash and while getting out of his truck, grabbed a pistol tucked into the pouch on the side of the pick-up door. He slammed the gun across Egner's face.

During the ensuing tussle Egner got control of the pistol and attempted to fire and Tomkins. The safety was still on the Gun and it did not discharge. Egner was arrested shortly after the botched robbery. He needed hospital treatment for injuries suffered at the hands of his would-be victim.
