Could the same scam artists be at work in a case involving an elderly couple from Towamencin Township. Dorothy and Richard Kirchman tell police  a man called their home on June 20th saying he was their grandson, a tell-tale sign of the Hatfield case. The man told The woman he was in trouble with Peruvian authorities and needed money. The Kirchmans, fearing for the welfare of their grandson, wired payments of 66-hundred dollars to the U-S embassy in Lima, the phone number provided by an alleged friend of their grandson, but the number was traced to Canada. They promised the Kirchman’s that at some point that would get 14-thousand dollars back. Somehow the scammers were able to determine that the couples grandson, a New Jersey resident, was not home. It’s possible the scammers used a social networking site and a search engine to obtain information. Towamencin Township Police Chief Paul Dickenson says it’s difficult to make arrests because the scammers are calling from outside the country.
