Bucks Co Tax Collectors Appeal Court Ruling

dollarTax collectors in the Pennridge and Central Bucks School Districts are appealing a Commonwealth Court ruling that said the school boards acted properly last year when they reduced the amount of money they pay elected tax collectors. In a written opinion, Judge Jim Flaherty said school boards have very broad discretion in setting tax collector compensation, and their actions were well thought out and not arbitrary or capricious.  He said the Pennridge and Central Bucks boards based their calculations on what it would cost them to collect taxes using modern, cost-effective technology not used by the elected tax collectors.  In an appeal filed with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the tax collectors and New Britain Township are asking the high court to sort out a problem that’s existed for years.  New Britain Township has been involved because local officials say the burden could fall to municipal government if the tax collectors are put out of business.
