Lawmaker Wants Public Leadership Votes

wnpv_politicsState Representative Daryl Metcalfe is pushing to have votes for house and senate leaders made public. He says they are secret now, allowing members to seek favors in Harrisburg while saying the right things back home.

“Once a leader is elected they can kind of run roughshod over the values of the majority of the caucus, and there’s really no way to hold them accountable because the members that are electing them are doing it in secret, and when they go home they express one point of view to their constituency, and then back in Harrisburg they do a lot of back-slapping, and continue electing the same leadership for giving them political cover for some of the things that they do and to secure grant money that they then dole out to the members who continue to elect them to the leadership positions.”

Metcalfe says all votes in committee and on the house and senate floor are made public, but leadership votes are taken behind closed doors.  He represents a district north of Pittsburgh that is part suburban and part rural, and he appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
