U Moreland Chief Drops Call For Lock Or Pay Ordinance

parking-lotUpper Moreland Police Chief Thomas Nestel has dropped his call for the township commissioners to consider an ordinance allowing police to fine people who repeatedly leave their vehicle doors unlocked. Last month he said 80 percent of thefts from vehicles involve unlocked doors, and he proposed an ordinance that would let police check vehicles parked on streets and leave a warning note and lock the doors if they found one unlocked.  If they found the same one unlocked again within a year they would fine the owner up to 25 dollars.  Now he says he will not push the ordinance because of substantial public opposition, and he has made his point.  Widespread media coverage got out his message of locking doors better than any advertising campaign he could have done.
