Montgomery County Transportation Planner Leo Bagley says the Sumneytown Pike Improvement Project between Allentown Road and West Point Pike in Upper Gwynedd has been going very well, and work is going on now at the site of an old freight railroad bridge that was removed a few days ago (pictured here before removal). He says the roadway is being made much wider at that point.
“We’re going from the two narrow lanes, where the stone walls were out there right on top of the road. We’ll be going from two lanes to five lanes and sidewalk and shoulder, and it’s really going to be quite an improvement.”
He says the job is on schedule.
“They’re anticipating being done with the construction probably by early December, depending upon the weather and the final coat of asphalt, but it will be open then even if the final coat isn’t put on until next spring.”
Work on a related project east of West Point Pike is finished. He says that includes a new pedestrian bridge over the Wissahickon Creek next to Genuardi’s.
“Upper Gwynedd added in the pedestrian bridge to allow people to walk all along Sumneytown Pike without having to veer onto the bridge itself and onto the roadway.”
He says the overall project is the biggest one under the county’s Jump Start program.
“The improvements on Sumneytown Pike exemplify the kinds of projects that we did with the municipalities to improve some of the intersections and roadways in the county with a good partnership of county money and local money.”
Bagley says a contribution from Merck also helped to cover the $8 million cost. He says that’s about a $500,000 over the original budget, largely because of extra work needed on the railroad bridge next to Allentown Road, but cost increases are not unusual on projects involving old bridges.
