Madonna: Corbett Has Chance Of Selling State Stores

dollarsFranklin and Marshall College Center for Politics and Public Affairs Director Terry Madonna says Governor-Elect Tom Corbett will be the third consecutive Republican governor pushing hard to sell the state liquor stores to private buyers. The others were Dick Thornburgh and Tom Ridge, and he believes Corbett has a better chance than Thornburgh or Ridge.

“In the past the argument was never that we’re going to deal with a structural deficit and get us out of the state’s fiscal problems, so I think they have a better than average chance of getting the liquor stores sold.  Now, it’s going to be a Herculean task.  It’s no sure thing.  I’m not saying it will happen.  I said better than average.”

Doctor Madonna says the structural deficit is about $5 billion, and selling the liquor stores may be one way Corbett can close the deficit while keeping his pledge not to raise taxes.  He appeared Thursday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
