Schwartz: Healthcare Repeal Just Politics

Allyson_SchwartzCongresswoman Allyson Schwartz, whose district is partly in Montgomery County and partly in Northeast Philadelphia, says the Republican effort to repeal the healthcare reform law is not about making healthcare more available and affordable. It’s about keeping campaign promises.

“Even though they know that this discussion about a repeal is not going to become a reality, they wanted to have this vote.  They wanted to be able to go home to their constituents and say they voted to repeal all of those health benefits for Americans and stop this health law from going forward, and it will be a political test later to see if they did a good thing, from their point of view politically, but it is a political moment.”

Schwartz, a Democrat, says the next campaign season is nearly two years away, and by then she thinks a lot more voters will see the benefits of the healthcare reform law.  She says it benefits seniors, children with pre-existing conditions, young adults who can stay on their parents’ policies longer and small businesses that can take tax credits for offering group health insurance.  She says the Republicans want to throw all of that away and start over again, and she believes that’s unreasonable.
