Gerlach Questions Libya Engagement

jim-gerlachThe cost of U.S. involvement in the assault on Libya is estimated at $1 billion or more so far, and the number grows larger every day. Congressman Jim Gerlach (pictured here), who represents parts of Montgomery, Chester and Berks Counties, says there are no guarantees that rebels will succeed in overthrowing dictator Moammar Gadhafi, or that democracy will follow if they do, and President Obama may have promised too much.

“I’m very concerned that the president has committed our armed forces to be involved right now.  Unless and until he comes forward with more specificity as to what the mission is and what our strategy is, not only to succeed but to withdraw, I think because of the fact the Libya does not present a threat to our country, if he was going to employ military forces I think the War Powers Act is pretty clear that he has to get authorization from congress.”

Gerlach says the U.S. must keep its commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan and, at a time when the country is heavily in debt, he cannot agree with the latest military action until the president makes the mission in Libya more justifiable.  He appeared Thursday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
