Montco Republicans Discuss Election Loss

wnpv_politicsDemocrats have broken the Montgomery County Republican Party’s 140-year control of the county courthouse, winning two of three seats on the County Board of Commissioners. State Representative Josh Shapiro got the most votes followed by his running-mate, Whitemarsh Township Supervisor Leslie Richards.  Incumbent Republican Commissioner Bruce Castor came in third, winning the minority seat.  He said registration translated into turnout was part of the problem.

“When you have a registration deficit like we have, if the Democrats turn out the same percentage of theirs as we do of ours, they win, so we have to turn out more of our people than they turn out of theirs as a matter of percentage.  The second thing is we started with a million dollars in the wrong direction.  We started at zero.  They started with a million dollars in the bank.  That’s a very high mountain to climb when the most any candidate ever raised for this office before was a million dollars, so they started off essentially with all of their fundraising done, and then piled a million or more on top of it.”

His running-mate, Lower Merion Township Commissioner Jenny Brown, came in last and she agreed that the numbers were against them.

“The money they had coming in was always an issue, and I think what he was talking about is that there are 32,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans and that’s something that puts you, I guess, on the defensive.”

She said she’s disappointed, but it was still a great experience, and right now she’s just thinking about keeping spending under control in Lower Merion and getting back to her law practice, and she’s not looking at another countywide campaign.
