Montco Garage Getting Emergency Assessment
The Montgomery County Commissioners have ordered an emergency assessment of a parking garage the county owns. It’s the Main Street Garage, across from the courthouse in Norristown. Chairman Josh Shapiro says an engineering firm working on the One Montgomery Plaza office building around the corner found serious damage, caused largely by water collecting in a stairwell.
“Over the winter months in particular, when things would thaw and freeze and salt would be thrown down, the concrete became compromised and chunks were coming loose. We thought it was best to be safe and not let people walk in that stairwell, so we shut off that stairwell, but there are still other stairwells and there is still an elevator for people to use in that garage, and people can still park there while this assessment is being done. If we find out at any juncture that it’s unsafe to park there, we will immediately shut down the garage.”
Shapiro says the engineering firm, McCormick-Taylor of Exton, will give the commissioners a detailed report on the structural condition of the Main Street Garage, telling them what they must do to fix it. He says they will have to shut it down during the repairs, and they are looking for alternative parking.
