Governor Corbett has signed a bill allowing several suburban municipalities to install red light cameras, which take a picture of the license plate on any car that runs a red light at an intersection that has them, and the driver gets a ticket in the mail. Montgomery County State Representative Todd Stephens, who voted for the bill, says further action is required at both the state and local levels before they can be installed.

“They’d have to apply to PennDOT first of all.  PennDOT has criteria they need to apply to determine if an intersection is appropriate for this type of traffic control, but first and foremost the municipality has to adopt a local ordinance.”

Stephens represents parts of Montgomery, Horsham and Upper Dublin Townships, which are all authorized to use red light cameras.  Other Montgomery County municipalities that can use them are Norristown, and Abington, Lower Providence, Upper Merion and Lower Merion Townships.  In Bucks County Falls, Middletown and Warminster Townships can use them.
