The Montgomery County District Attorney’s office and other agencies are presenting forums on violence prevention, bullying and teen depression Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at schools in six districts including Norristown, Methacton, Colonial and Wissahickon. DA Risa Ferman says they will focus largely on cyberbullying over social networking websites.
“Social media is the new frontier in bullying, and things that used to happen on the schoolyard, backyard or down the street now happen on the internet, and one of the things we see, unfortunately, is that kids are more willing to be vicious when they have the anonymity of the computer so they go online and, whether it’s Facebook or My Space or Twitter, they’re using these social media sites to really hurt other people, and that’s one of the things that we’ve had to deal with in law enforcement, particularly in our juvenile courts.”
Ferman says cyberbullying cases come up frequently in juvenile court, but fortunately Montgomery County has not had the horror stories that have happened elsewhere. Parent Forums will be held Tuesday night at Arcola Intermediate School in Eagleville and Wednesday night at Colonial Elementary School in Plymouth Meeting. She says parents from all Montgomery County school districts are welcome, and they run from 7:00 until 8:30 both nights.
