Bucks Co School District Says Law Limits Liability Payout
The Pennsbury School District says paying more than $500,000 to a former student who lost a leg after a bus hit her would violate state law.
The law limits liability to $500,000 in civil lawsuits against school districts. A Bucks County jury awarded Ashley Zauflik of Falls Township $14 million. Her lawyer says an insurance policy could cover $10 million of that, but the district says it cannot dictate how insurance companies spend money, and a court will have to determine the final amount of the award. Her lawyer has vowed to appeal to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court if necessary. Zauflik was 17 years old when the runaway bus ran into her and a crowd of other students in January of 2007.
