NP ROTC: No Military Commitment

North Penn High School Junior ROTC Teacher Todd Zachary says college ROTC students must commit to military service, but that is not true with the high school program. He says it comes with no obligation, commitment or contract.

“Our first-year cadets don’t even have to wear the uniform, so I tell them they can wear their hair as long as they want and they can have as many earrings as they want.  We ask them to wear the uniform in the second year, but it’s only one time during the week and there is absolutely zero obligation or commitment to the military.  We’ll graduate, for example, 20 to 25 students per year and about three or four of them will enter the military.”

Zachary says the North Penn program is now in its sixth year, and this is the second year ninth graders have been allowed to enroll.  He says enrollment among ninth graders has grown from 9 last year to 27 this year, and he expects more growth next year.  He appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
