Number Crunching Continues in North Penn School District

Eighteen budget cut proposals remain on the table in the North Penn School District.   They came up Tuesday night as the school board discussed how best to hold the line on the property tax increase for the next school year at 2.9% and cut the budget by at least two-point-eight million dollars.   District officials say more than half of the targeted savings could be realized by reducing salary expense.   The largest proposed component of the payroll reduction is requiring more teachers at the middle and high schools to teach six periods daily.   The others include lowering physical education requirements for 12th grade, reducing library staff in the middle schools, not running courses that do not meet the district minimum roster policy, cutting the frequency of strings lessons in the elementary school music program by half and putting students with similar instruments together when their stand alone class sizes are small.   Three district residents spoke out against cutting the music program during the public comment period of the school board meeting Tuesday night.
