Number Crunching in North Penn School District

Forty-one budget cut proposals are on the table in the North Penn School District.   Superintendent Curt Dietrich put them before the school board Tuesday night to kick off discussions on how best to reduce the budget for the next school year by at least $2,800,000 and hold the line on the property tax increase at 2.9%.   The proposed cuts target student activities including sports programs as well as the rennovation project at Inglewood Elementary School.   There is also a proposal to cut the number of teaching positions by having more teachers at the middle and high school levels teach six periods each day.   The school board at its Januray 19th business meeting will vote on applying for exceptions that would allow it to raise taxes above the 1.7% Act One state index.   If it decides to pass on the exceptions, the budget cuts needed will total about $4,500,00 instead of the $2,800,00 currently under discussion.
