Here we go again. On Saturday night from the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University, the Archbishop Wood girls basketball team will be playing for their third straight state basketball championship. After graduating seven seniors from last years squad, including the starting five, this years team has almost done what nobody thought was possible.
Everyone except head coach Jim Ricci. I talked to Jim last spring when I invited him, and last years championship team, on the radio to be a part of the show, "On The Bench." I asked him if the run was over. Was it time to "re-tool" or "re-build." He truly believed that the talent he had coming back could compete at high level. He was right. After finishing as the third seed in District Twelve, and entering the state tournament with a 15-10 record, the Lady Vikings have found their grove. A 14 point first round win over Oley Valley was followed by an 8 point over Trinity. They needed two overtimes to beat South Park before taking down Chartiers Valley in the semi-finals setting up Saturday nights meeting with Lancaster Catholic. Lancaster Catholic (30-3) is the number one seed out of District Three. Lancaster Catholic, who's last state title came in 1996, got to the title game by holding Neumann-Goretti to 27 points in the quarter-finals before putting up 90 points in a semi-final win over Prep Charter. Tip off time is 6pm.
