Baseball With An International Flavor
This year the Fourth of July holiday calendar includes fireworks, apple pie and baseball. Baseball with our neighbors from the north, Canada. A group of 12 year olds will cross the boarder to spend a few days in the area, competing against some of the best in their age group from the Harleysville, Souderton Boyertown and Quakertown baseball communities. Nicknamed the "Friendship Series" it was created with the help of Joe Schembri and others back in 2007 and continues to grow to this day. The Canadian team is a group of all-star caliber players who play their ball in and around the Toronto area. They are matched up against teams comprised of members of the Boyertown, Harleysville, Quakertown and Souderton youth baseball associations. Two games are played on each day of the two day tournament. It is a round robin tournament set-up where no true champion is crowned. Schembri says the idea got off the grown by him receiving an email from the group explaining that they were passing through town and looking for someone to play. Below you can listen to the entire interview WNPV sports director Jeff Nolan had with Shembri along with the complete game schedule.
