Harper Happy To See Budget Deal
Republican Montgomery County State Representative Kate Harper says she is happy to see that Governor Rendell and legislative leaders have apparently reached a budget deal, and she understands why people are upset that it’s getting done three months late. ”The public is angry because we haven’t gotten the job done, but I believe most legislators feel that the public would have been angrier had we raised their personal income tax, and that’s the problem. The governor kept pushing, pushing and pushing for a personal income tax, and the legislature kept pulling back.”
Harper says raising the personal income tax would have been exactly the wrong thing to do during a recession. She believes most lawmakers in both parties opposed it, and some Democrats went along only because they wanted to support the governor.
